The Big Blue Egg

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

We are in Texas and were able to participate, for the first time, in my family’s annual Adult Easter Egg Hunt (AEEH). There is one huge blue egg that lands the lucky hunter a very nice prize. The smaller plastic eggs are filled with candy, gifts, lottery tickets and even cash. There are prizes for finding the most eggs and the least eggs as well.

Frank found the Big Blue Egg after only 20 minutes of searching. Papa had hidden it under a stool by the toolshed. I looked under every overturned bucket on the farm but I’d have never looked under that stool. Frank won a big basket full of the new-release DVD movies. That’ll come in VERY handy on the road when we’re staying at campgrounds without cable TV access. Ali won the prize for finding the most eggs. Her prize was a large 3-D kite. We’re not sure where we’re going to store it here in the RV but it’ll be fun when we stop at the beach!

I didn’t bother carrying a basket, knowing that would slow me down. I shoved all the eggs I found in my blouse. I found lots of eggs and the relatives were teasing me, telling me I looked like long-passed grandmothers who lived back when women’s underthings weren’t very supportive.

Burnt Biscuit Ranch

Friday, March 25th, 2005

Well, we arrived at my family’s ranch (named for my mother’s cooking!) on Sunday evening and while the children have been hard at work caring for the horses, mucking the stalls, and hauling sticks and manure, Richard and I have been sipping lemonade on the porch and enjoying our “vacation.”

As I sit here now, Ali is driving the tractor, Frank is inside making himself a sandwich, and Max is playing with the “other horse” (a Great Dane) named Cherokee. Max pronounces her name “Turkey.”

Tonight they’re going to try get the cattle corraled back into the closest pen. Speaking of cows, last week, we stayed at a campground that was so far back in the hills that we had to cross over cattle grates to get there. While the RV was bouncing to and fro over one of those grates, I turned and asked the children, “Do you know what cattle grates are for?”

Ali shook her head and solemnly replied, “Yep. That’s where the cows wipe the poop off their hooves.”

No Longer a Dizzy Blonde

My one trip to the physical therapist did the trick and the vertigo I reported last week hasn’t returned. Yea! Richard is happy about that because he wasn’t looking forward to doing all the driving on our Spring Seeking trip. Yes, we’ve once again taken the business and family on the road! As I write this, we just passed over the Maryland / West Virginia border and are heading to a KOA campground in Virginia that has high-speed wireless Internet access. We’ll be keeping our entire publishing business going via wi-fi Internet connections across several states. (We actually are more productive on the road – probably because there are less mundane daily things to deal with when your home is only 24-feet long.) You can track our progress and (mis?)adventures at: http://www.WirelessTrips.com

Our dog, Percy, is along for the trip and he’s having a great time leaving his ummm mark in every state along the way. We were thrilled today to finally find some grass that wasn’t brown and covered with three feet of snow! While there is still some S.S.S. (shady spot snow) in Pennsylvania, we saw far more grass than white stuff there. We haven’t found any buds on trees yet, but we’re looking for them and we’ll let you know just where Spring seems to be when we find it.
